113? 103? 133?

Some of the comments on the images published here are really funny. It's like some restaurant would decide to publish chef's thoughts on a new soup receipe, and some folks would look at the process and say, 'Gee, he pours water in! We will never dine here!'

Right now our main goal is to make *any* big Optimus available to the public. We really want everyone to be happy, but first of all we want to make happy those who want a keyboard with displays on its keys. Optimus-113 model will definetely be produced, but only after Optimus-103 model ships.

If you're soliciting input, you have to expect people to disagree with your decisions. What would you rather have - someone who says "I'd buy this keyboard, but only if you included X, as you originally announced/planned", or someone who just silently doesn't buy it? :)

Optimus-113 model will definetely be produced, but only after Optimus-103 model ships.

That's good to hear!

Why don't you ship both models simultaneously?

Why should the people who prefer the 103 key model have to wait?

Why should the company have to wait to produce two successful models before garnering income from the first one?

I don't care for the 10 extra keys

But I do care about the fact that your keyboard layout doesn't correspond with any layout that I know of.

Nowadays there are basically two kind of keyboard layouts: layouts with a short Left Shift key and a tall Enter key (let's call them International keyboards, for the sake of giving them a name), and layouts with a long Left Shift key, and a "short" Enter key (US Keyboard).

Your keyboard doesn't correspond with any of the two. At best, it's an US layout with the "Slash key" misplaced and a weird Enter key. At worst, it's an International keyboard that's missing one key (and has another one misplaced).

Please, have a look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout

I certainly was looking forward to buying the keyboard if it lived to promise, but I *can't* buy a keyboard with a weird layout and a _missing_ key! :(

There are two keyboard layouts that you can choose from. Choose either US or International for a start, if you can't make both, but at least make the keyboard useful for some of your future customers.

It is the right optimus-103 keyboard, not the joke-picture I made.

Double funktion for the num keyboard

well just to make the hole discussion even weirder, what about a keyboard without the numeric section, and has that as a separate module, that can be clicked on.
also an other possibility is that the numeric can double as launch keys, or just add 4 buttons on top next to "PrintScreen" "ScrollLock" & "Pause"

Good news for all, I personally will be waiting for the 113 or even the 133 if you ship it, but its good to know that you are giving everyone an option as to which one they want. I for one _was_ dissapointed with the sudden layout change and deletion of keys, but I wasn't going crazy about it just yet.

Just out of curiosity, about how long of a delay can we expect between the 103 and 113? On another hand, what are the chances that the 113 will use the origional layout, with the big square enter key etc. After all, if we are going to have a unique keyboard, I wouldn't mind getting used to a new layout. :)

Great job overall though, I've been following this project for a while and am glad to see finally getting towards production!

Thats good to hear, how long will the gap be between the 103 and the 113?
At least its making progress!

You're not expecting an answer on that, of course. The guy doesn't really answer to Any support questions I have personally asked him about my Mini Three (which DOESN'T work after two weeks) and GEE did you see that software? It's ABSOLUTE lies about what you see on the "Mini three demonstration page" and the real software.

I guess 103/113/1683 will suck big time like it, too.

Good point

Personally, I think the extra keys are cool, but they aren't make or break for me. I'll buy the 103 and be quite happy about it. The extra keys would be nice, but it's the core idea that matters, keys with displays

I'm actually glad that you opted to scale back and do the 103 first, as it reduces cost and complexity, it means there is a better chance of a successful launch. I've been looking forward to this since it was announced, I'll be thrilled when I've got a full-size Optimus keyboard in my hands, no matter how many keys it has.

It Works For Me

I actually sent them an email of an idea that when numlock is on it has numbers and when it is not it turns into function keys. I don't know if they got it or not. I am actually thinking the 103 will be better for me, because i have one of those things that go in an out below your desk so i have limited space.

"Some of the comments on the images published here are really funny. It's like some restaurant would decide to publish chef's thoughts on a new soup receipe, and some folks would look at the process and say, 'Gee, he pours water in! We will never dine here!'"

That's a flawed analogy. To keep with the food theme it would be more akin to promising people the prospect of a 7 course meal for several years then announcing that you were only going to serve hors d'oeuvres.

"Right now our main goal is to make *any* big Optimus available to the public. We really want everyone to be happy, but first of all we want to make happy those who want a keyboard with displays on its keys. Optimus-113 model will definetely be produced, but only after Optimus-103 model ships."

That's more refreshing news and I hope the 103 is successful enough to allow the production of the original design.

Ok, a couple things. I'm glad you told us the 113 would ship eventually, but did you only tell us because of the comments? I would have hated to have bought the 103 then see the 113 announced afterwards.

Secondly, and more importantly, why can't both versions have the 4 keys above the numpad? I personally didn't like the extra function keys on the side due to the desk real estate it would use, but those 4 keys are useful, especially for Macs. I personally am mostly a gamer, and sometimes it's really handy to have external volume controls, for various reasons (phone calls are one example).

Like sfgrrl said, your analogy is flawed. It's more like a chef telling everyone "this soup will taste like rhubarb mixed with rubbing alochol and broccoli" and everyone saying "eww, we won't eat that."

Everyone who has posted here has said that they don't like the optimus 103, and most have said that they wont' buy it. If Optimus 103 flops

November 11 2006, 17:36:11 UTC 5 years ago

continuted... oops...

If Optimus 103 flops, are you still going to release 113 or 133?
More likely, lots of people not on this forum wont' even think about it and they'll go "oooh! it's that optimus thingie! I want it!", but I think we can all agree that it's a flawed product because:

-It lacks four keys that the MacOS uses
-It lacks keys needed for international layouts

Thanks for the update, Mr. Тема. I shall be waiting for the 113. The screens are obviously excellent, but not -quite- enough.

Also, I really like the big enter key! I find my right-hand little finger resting uselessly in the notch of my "¬"-shaped one. I'm not an ergonomist, but I imagine somebody concerned in the design is, and the extended space-bar looks a little cool.

I thought you could use a positive comment.

113

Thank you..., i know me and my friend will be getting the 113. Those 11 buttons would be very useful as i wont need to keep switching between the F1 keys and shortcuts.

Keep up the good work

I think it's really funny that you'd allow comments and then think it's odd that people critique your changes! It just sounds to me like you guys misunderstood the original geeky charm of the keyboard, Mr. Tema. (Not to say that the LED keys don't have their own, equally geeky charm.) I'm glad to hear that you are indeed going to release another version with those other keys added, though.

Side note: if you're gaming, why don't you have external volume controls on the speakers? I mean, more keys are always better, but I think only the later Mac keyboards have those keys, and one company's not really a great justification for adding a couple keys.

I'm a PC user with an Eclipse II keyboard and i love having those volume keys above the numpad.

Многоуважемый Тёма Паша!

Excellent news that there will be a 113 in addition to the 103; should make lots of people happy. The only problem I potentially foresee for you is that in releasing the 103 first, you may end up with most potential customers waiting for the 113 and consequently limiting the cashflow from the 103 and cramping the 113's funding.

You might consider reversing the sequence, considering that if you're commanding a premium price on the 113, you may get away with a higher profit margin, and consequently be able to recoup a lot more of your development costs right away, and then release the 103 as a "mainstream" or "Optimus for the rest of us" device. (Sort of like Apple's iPod product roadmap.)

On the other hand, if the 103 also functions as a proof-of-concept, early-adopter product to help refine the technology before the slightly more complicated 113 comes out, then the current sequence is more than reasonable.

Всего доброго и много успехов желаю вам....

You could make 3 keyboards out of one - a function key module, a numpad module (I know what you think about this, but I am one of those people who do not use the numpad much) and the keyboard itself. More than that, you could split the keyboard down the middle to make it ergonomic.

[info]mrmikey83

November 12 2006, 01:43:53 UTC 5 years ago

Modules

I was just thinking of a "modular" design too. Would be cool if the edge of the 103 came off and revealed a plug to add the extra 11 keys as a module. Maybe even have the edge of that module come off to add a second module and have 22 more keys, etc... Could even make the numpad a removable module so you could remove it and put an 11 key module on the right or even to the right of the numpad.

i like having the function keys clumped into 4s instead of 3s since many programs use the differenct clusters for different tasks, and the big enter key was the best part! the volume keys were nice along with the large excape/ key toggle key. i dont mind the 10 keys on the side gone, thats more space for the mini3

over all im glad to see that you guys are willing to make changes to your design unlike some other companies. it all depends on the dementions of the board, if the keys are color or b&w, and price.

ooh and do we have the final word on key type? i hope its like the ones in the original render, square and sorta low laying

Good news on the 113, but how long do we have to wait to get a decent enter key? The backwards-L shape just doesn't work any more.
