I think there's too much light, the black background looks grey.

agreed - yikes! I hope this is just the picture and now how it really comes out. the sample images at the artlebedev site i've been looking at for two years are beautiful.

if it doesn't end up looking like that there's no way i'd buy it. i think i'm going to miss the OLEDs. :(

I concur. Too much like my grandmother's television.

Tough to get an idea of what it'll look like from one photo, though.

I hope brightness is adjustable.

It'd be nice to have ClearType on it :)

As said before, a bit too bright, and I liked the old sharp cornered look. I hope that the backround won't be so bright, it just looks like those old gameboy backlights. Very awesome though, any chance of pictures of the same key showing different stuff? Just to see.

I agree. I assume the last image of the diffrent key shapes/types was another rendering (as opposed to a picture), but thats how I'm expecting it look when it's done. I wouldn't buy this.

Also... we haven't seen any color shots yet... are they on the way?

can we turn off the light ? or is it always on ?
same as everyone else ... to bright (or to gray) and sharp is much nicer ...

Awww.... now this is pretty disappointing, I must say. I mean, this doesnt really look like 32x32 pixels, rather like less - if this is really what the Optimus 113/103/whatever is going to look like I seriously hope for some sort of software-based subpixel rendering (pretty much like cleartype).

Good to see the at least one key working though! I just hope this is just a very early mock-up of a key, not the final deal.

Keep up the work,
Niklas Andreae

Re: Dont be so harsh.

It sounds to me like everyone appreciates that they are giving us these glimpses, and it is probably important for them to know, at an early stage, what our preferences are. Maybe they thought that the roudned corners would really be preferrable, and hearing that it isn't from several users will guide them back to the preferred sharp edges and save some cost by making these important decisions very early in the game.

Kudos to the engineers straying away from drivers, I would like to see all hardware become independant and allow my computer to work on the things I want to work on. I wonder if this means that the keyboard will have it's own graphics engine then, and allow it to go to USB only?

Very cool, you guys rock!

Thanks for showing us this stuff whilst it is in development. It's rare to see something so desirable whilst it is being created, keep up the good work. I like many others are looking forward to seeing the completed product!

Re: Very cool, you guys rock!

I agree, thank you for this in-development picture.
pleaaaaase do not be discouraged by these pessimistic ppl commenting above. ;)

These pictures for us are like a picture book of your baby child. This way we can see your baby grow and grow. I think all of us want to see this grow and grow.

I really don't dig the rounded look. Sharp all the way, along with adjustable brightness.

I will not judge this image at all coz it is even not a prototype, yet I would like to solute to the Art Lebedev for such pictures, they give us that very feeling that the project is alive and even more – it involves. Are you still going to release it this year or? Any ideas about price? Is it more than 500 euro or less? More pictures please…

I got an idea, why don’t you make it gray scale? I mean, the most important part is an idea isn’t it? To customize any key you want, and if you use grey scale it will be cheaper to produce, and from some point of view it will look more stylish. Let’s think – letters are better visible when written in white on the black back ground or vice versa. All other symbols can be adapted. And finally the targeting – if the keyboard in its actual color variant sells for, let say, 500 dollars, only enthusiast will go for it, if grey scale variant will cost something like 250 dollars it will become a device for every professional who needs more from his keyboard. Think about it.

Doesn't look too promising... :-/

For those saying it's too bright...it can be dimmed. Not to mention the clear cover can be tinted so that you can't see the pixel grid.
Also, in this pic, you can see the pixel grid and it is square. The rounded edges look like the outer mask or casing of the LCD module. I'm still hoping the screen fills the key to the edges but unless the LCD module can be modified, it looks like the screen will be above center and narrow in the key.

I would like to see the same pic with a finger (or ruler) next to the screen for a size comparison if this is the final screen to be used.

Good job and keep up the good work!

E-ink?

Did you guys consider using the e-ink technology? You could get rid of the additional power supply; USB would provide a plenty of power, because there is no back-light at all. And the image would be way sharper than it is now (even with the power off). Although the color would be quite an issue, not sure if there are any color e-ink displays available yet...

Keep up the good work!

Re: E-ink?

E-ink - slow and monochrome.
